Mrs. Mary Lucy Monk, age 81, passed peacefully from this life to the next on September 12, 2020 at Rush Hospital in Meridian, Mississippi. Born on June 29, 1939, she spent the entirety of her life in her cherished hometown of Lake, Mississippi.

“Mama Lucy” as she was known by numerous children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, brought years of joyful memories and love to those that knew her. Her passions included spending time with family and friends, traveling, and flower gardening. Before her health declined, she was an active member of the Lake Garden Club for many years. She was a member of Lake Baptist Church. To others, she was known as teacher, principal, or mentor. She spent the entirety of her professional life in service to the Lake school system, serving in numerous teaching and administrative positions for over twenty-five years.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Mattie Ruth Evans; her father, Elmer Evans; and her sister, Joann Nichols.

She is survived by her loving husband of sixty-two years, William Kenneth Monk; her sister, Elma Dean (Willard) McDonald of Butler, Alabama; two sons and one daughter; Joel (Connie) Monk of Lake, Stacy (Becky) Monk of Hickory, and Jennifer (Shane) Vick of Lake. She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Caleb Monk, Ryan (Krystle) Monk, Fallon (Bubba) Pace, Regan (Madelyn) Monk, Haley (Tyler) Watson, Dru Vick, and Kinley Vick. Further, she is also survived by five precious great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 15, 2020, at Wolf Funeral Home in Lake, with Bro. Ken McLemore and Bro. Jess Dilley officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. preceding the funeral service. Burial will follow at Pine Ridge Cemetery in Lawrence.

Serving as pallbearers will be Caleb Monk, Ryan Monk, Regan Monk, Evan McDonald, Bubba Pace, and Tyler Watson.

I was sad to learn of the passing of Lucy. We lived across the hall from each other at East Central Junior College in 1958. Along with Jessie Whittle, Mary Beth Nelson, and Nancy Hollongsworth, we shared many good times together. I had heard that she ha
D Parkinson as my husband does. My prayers go out to you at this sad time. Martha Chapman Lewis
