Gene Austin “Buddy” Gibbs, 79, a resident of Lake passed away Monday, January 09, 2012 at Lackey Memorial Hospital in Forest, MS. Visitation was held at Wolf Funeral Services in Morton, MS on Wednesday, January 11, 2012 from 5:30 until 8:00 pm and on Thursday, January 12, 2012 from 8:00 am until 1:30 pm. Funeral services were at Salem Baptist Church in Lake, MS on Thursday, January 12, 2012 at 3:00 pm with burial following in the Salem Baptist Cemetery. Officiating was Rev. Larry Duncan, Rev. Sammy Stroud and Rev. Kenny Lang. Wolf Funeral Services in Morton, MS was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Gibbs was a lifelong resident of the Salem Community in Scott County and was a member of Salem Baptist Church in Lake, MS. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and loved cattle farming.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Ollie Gibbs, four sisters, Gladys Stroud, Mary Wolfe, Sadie Wolfe, and Vera Shoemaker; one brother, William Lee Gibbs; one grandson, William Gibbs.
Survived by wife, Ophelia Gibbs of Lake, MS; five sons, Alton Gibbs of Lake, MS; Rickey Gibbs of Lake, MS; Larry Gibbs of Greenwood, MS; Tim Gibbs of Lake, MS; Ronald Gibbs of Lake, MS; two sisters, Annie Mae Holifield of Enterprise, MS; Marie Anderson of Quitman, LA; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Scott Gibbs, Eric Gibbs, Greg Shoemaker, Terry Pugh, Carl Wolfe, Ken Anderson, Donald Pugh, and Shane Nester. Honorary pallbearers were Harold Wolf, Billy Shoemaker, Steve Gibbs, Carleton Stroud, Jimmy Stroud, and J.D. Smith.
