Janell Crapps Armstrong, a beloved teacher's assistant, gifted cook, and cherished matriarch, peacefully departed this world on March 28, 2025, in Morton, Mississippi. Born on April 16, 1937, in Scott County, Mississippi, she brought joy and wisdom to all who had the fortune of knowing her.
Janell spent her life nurturing young minds and brightening the days of countless students as a dedicated teacher's assistant. Her warmth and kindness were evident in every interaction, making her not just a mentor, but a friend to those she served. Her culinary skills were legendary, with her famous coconut cake becoming a staple at many meals—the sweet centerpiece of memories infused with laughter and love.
Beyond her professional life, Janell had a passion for flower gardening that mirrored the beauty she cultivated in her relationships. She treasured her time spent cooking for and sharing the joys of life with her grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, creating a legacy of love that will carry on for generations.
Janell leaves behind a loving family who will forever hold her memory dear. She is survived by her sons, Jack Armstrong, III and his wife Vonda, and Russell Owen Armstrong and his wife Julie. Her legacy lives on through her beloved grandchildren: Abbey Mathiews and her husband Peyton, Jay Armstrong, Ashley Franks and her husband Josh, and Brad Easley and his wife Courtney. Furthermore, she took immense pride in her great-grandchildren—Priscilla Franks, Eli Franks, and Barrett Easley—who will carry forth the love and lessons she imparted. Janell is also survived by one brother, Buford Crapps; one brother-in-law, Stites Easterling, Sr; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Janell was predeceased by many loved ones, including her parents, Alex and Leona Crapps; her first husband, Kelly Latham; her husband, Jack Armstrong, Jr.; her son, Michael Latham; her brothers, Wayne, Bill, Kenneth, and Walter Crapps; her sisters, Patricia Crapps and Jeanie Easterling; and her nephew, Walter Crapps, Jr. Each of these losses shaped her life, yet she bore them with grace, always holding tightly to her family and the love they shared.
The community will gather to celebrate Janell's life and the countless contributions she made to those around her. Visitation services are scheduled for Monday, March 31, 2025, from 9:30 AM until 10:45 AM at Wolf Funeral Services in Morton, MS, with her funeral service starting at 11:00 AM in the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow at Bethlehem Baptist Cemetery in Morton, MS. Pallbearers will be Jay Armstrong, Peyton Mathiews, Alex Crapps, Zach Crapps, and Chance Easterling. Honorary pallbearers are Jim W. Armstrong, Jr., Shannon Armstrong, John Miles, Tommy Miles, James Crapps, Clarence Crapps, Stites Easterling, Jr., and Mike Crapps.
Janell's life touched many and her spirit will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her. In every garden that blossoms and every shared meal, her love will live on, reminding us of the beautiful legacy of a remarkable woman.
