James L. “Schraunchy” Massey
James “Schraunchy” was born in Ludlow, MS on July 12, 1942 and died Sunday, August 4, 2013 after a brief illness at St. Dominic-Jackson Memorial Hospital, Jackson, MS.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Grace Massey and his in-laws, Roma and Edward Purvis. He is survived by his beloved wife, high school sweetheart and best friend, Bettye, his daughter and son, who he loved unconditionally, Beverly of Houston TX; Jeff (Donna) of Mendenhall, MS and the joys of his life his beautiful granddaughters, Kristin (Donald) Berry of New Hebron, MS; Karli Massey of Oxford, MS; Isabella Fayad of Houston, TX; Claudia Fayad, of Houston, TX and Luis Fayad, III, of College Station, TX.
Schraunchy worked in the sleeping bag manufacturing business for 30 years. He also worked for the Rankin County School District. Schraunchy was a product of the famous “Howard Sessum Basketball Era” of Pelahatchie, MS. He was recognized as the best left handed shooter in the state. He enjoyed reliving these “Glory Days” with anyone who would listen. He received his nickname “Schraunchy” during this time, because of his scrauny build and carried the name for the rest of his life.
Schraunchy was an avid fisherman, gardener and cook. He enjoyed instructing his children and grandchildren in the art of each. He had a passion for country music and loved George Jones and Percy Sledge.
He was a member of Pelahatchie Baptist Church. He was a devoted family man and enjoyed the simple things of life, especially sitting on the back porch with his TV and beloved dog “Jake”.
He leaves many friends and extended family members. His gentle manner and devotion to his family will be forever cherished by them.
Visitation is Tuesday, August 06, 2013 at Wolf Funeral Services in Morton, MS from 5:30 until 8:00 pm and Wednesday, August 07, 2013 from 10:00 until 10:45 pm. The Memorial Service will be Wednesday, August 07, 2013 at 11:00 am in the chapel with interment at Concord Baptist Church in Pelahatchie, MS.
Pallbearers will be Clay Purvis, Brent Bowman, Richard Warren, Duncan Tucker, J.W. Barnes and John Patrick. Honorary pallbearers will be Red McMillan, Bobby Warren, and Collest Johnson
