J. Howard “Doc” Merchant, 84, of Morton, went home to be with our Lord, August 28, 2014. Howard was born October 3, 1929 in Morton, MS. He married Ruby Lee Doty on December 31, 1954 and was a faithful, devoted husband.
Following high school he joined the National Guard and then served our country as a medic (U.S. Army) during the Korean Conflict. He was employed with the City of Jackson Fire Department for 28 ½ years and retired as Captain. Howard was a Boy Scout leader and taught children and adults in Sunday School, Church Training and VBS at the former Van Winkle Baptist Church (Jackson, MS) and Bethlehem Baptist Church (Morton, MS). He also faithfully served Bethlehem Baptist Church as deacon for more than 15 years. Howard’s hobbies and livelihood included hunting, fishing, trapping, woodworking, rebuilding cars, gardening and cooking. He moved home to Morton, MS after retirement and continued to lead an exemplary, godly life.
Howard is survived by his loving wife, Ruby Lee Merchant; children –Ann (Allen) Fox, Jimmy (Melissa) Merchant and Shreree Crosby. He was PaPaw to four grandchildren –Shelby (Karen), Blake (Kim), Kristin, Logan and three great-grandchildren –Brecken, Haley, and Autumn. Howard also is survived by siblings –Sue Tatum, Bonnie Austin, Bennett Merchant and Mary Ellen (Jim) Mathis; a host of loving nieces, nephews and close family friends. He was preceded in death by his parents J. I. (Pat) and Susie Merchant and sister Myrtis Jefcoat.
Howard’s family has been overwhelmed by the outpouring of kindness and generosity of friends and community, during this time of illness and loss.
Visitation will be held on Sunday August 31, 2014 from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM at Wolf Funeral Services in Morton, MS. Funeral Services will be held on Monday September 1, 2014 at 10:00 AM at the Bethlehem Baptist Church in Morton, MS. Burial will follow in the Morton Memorial Gardens in Morton, MS. Officiating will be Rev. Matt Armstrong. Wolf Funeral Services in Morton, MS. will be in charge of the arrangements.
