Harold Lloyd Phillips, 87, from Pelahatchie, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and his beloved dogs on August 31, 2021. He was born July 27, 1934 in Wilcox County, Alabama to William Phillips and Daisy Cooper. Services will be at Crossroads Baptist Church on Friday, September 3, 2021 at 11:30 PM with Bro. John Vaughn officiating. Burial will be at Crossroads Baptist Cemetery under the direction of Wolf Funeral Services.
Harold married the love of his life, Elizabeth “Libby” Rogers, May 6, 1968. He loved “Junking” and his happy place was welding and tinkering in his junk. He served eight years in the Alabama National Guard. He was known as the Mayor of Pelahatchie by the Can Man of Jackson due to the number of loads he would take them.
His other happy place was being with family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren, and that included his grand-dogs. The grand-dogs could be found surrounding him on his seat and were spoiled by him. Libby would have to fix an extra plate of food for the grand-dogs and he could sometimes get caught feeding them from his fork.
Harold was known as “Singing Pappaw” at Blair Batson. When his grandson, Jamey was there for a lengthy illness, he would come every day to relieve his mother for her to get out of the room. He would sit in a rocker with Jamey with the door to the room open watching and singing to the other children as they came by in the hall. Jamey was so attached to his “Singing Pappaw” that a recording had to be made when he was transferred to Cincinnati just so he would sleep.
For years Harold enjoyed playing Santa for the Pelahatchie Fire Department, Walters Fire Department, Pelahatchie Elementary School and Town of Pelahatchie Christmas Parade. He was a natural with his love of children and that jolly little laugh.
Harold is preceded in death by his parents, William Phillips and Daisy Morgan Cooper; siblings, W. H Phillips, Pearl Spencer, Carrie Mink and grandson, James Harold “Jamey” Phillips.
