Shirley M. Merchant

Shirley M. Merchant, a beloved educator and dedicated community member, peacefully passed away at her residence in Morton, Mississippi, on February 25, 2025, at the age of 92. Born on February 2, 1933, in Scott County, Mississippi, she spent her life embodying the values of kindness, dedication, and love.

Mrs. Merchant was a revered teacher at East Rankin Academy and Morton Public School, where she influenced countless students with her passion for learning and her unwavering support. Beyond her professional accomplishments, she was known for her joy in playing cards, particularly the game of Hand and Foot, which she often enjoyed with family and friends. She found solace and happiness in music, especially gospel, and cherished her time working on crossword puzzles and watching game shows, activities that brought her much joy.

A proud member of First Baptist Church in Morton, Mrs. Merchant was deeply involved in her Sunday School Class, where she fostered connections and shared her faith with others in the community. Her contributions to her church and students reflected her commitment to service and education.

She leaves behind her cherished family, including her daughter, Amy Merchant of Florence, MS, and her two sons, Kirk Merchant of Morton, MS, and Karl Merchant of Ocean Springs, MS. She also adored her two grandsons, Hunter Pierce and Matthew Merchant.

Mrs. Merchant was preceded in death by her beloved husband, George D. Merchant; her son, Doug Merchant; and her nine brothers and sisters. Her legacy of love, care, and commitment to education will remain etched in the hearts of all who knew her.

Visitation will be held at Wolf Funeral Services in Morton on February 28, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 10:45 AM, followed by a funeral service beginning at 11:00 AM.   The family invites all who knew Mrs. Merchant to join in celebrating her life and the indelible mark she left on all of us.
