Morton

William "Bill" Dettmann, born on June 26, 1957, in Benton Harbor, Michigan, passed away on February 26, 2025, at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson, Mississippi. Bill was a passionate Harley-Davidson enthusiast and a lover of Rock and Roll music, reflecting the vibrant spirit that characterized his life. For thirty-five years, he dedicated himself to the profession of over-the-road hauling, embracing the freedom of the open road and the thrill of adventure it brought.

Tragically, life took an unexpected turn in 2012 when a motorcycle accident left Bill quadriplegic. Despite the challenges that followed, he remained a resilient and inspirational figure to many. Bill was a lifelong member of the First Congregational Church UCC in Benton Harbor, where he found community and support throughout his life.

Bill leaves behind a loving family, including his cherished daughter, Heather Perdomo-Mejia, and son, Brandon Dettmann, who is married to Ashley Dettmann. He is also survived by his brother Darrell Dettmann, and his sister Yolanda Baker, who is married to Douglas Baker. The joy of Bill's life was amplified by his eight grandchildren: Cody Phillips (married to Sherree), Kaylie Hoge, Xavier Dettmann (married to Jordyn), Aundrea Dettmann, Robert Dettmann, Mercedes Perdomo, Cole Drummond, and Jaxson Dettmann, alongside his three beloved great-grandchildren, Katie Belle, Altas, and Elijah.

Preceding him in death were his father, Otto Dettmann, his mother, Jeanne Urch, and his sister, Rhonda Short. Bill's legacy will be celebrated by all who knew him, and a memorial luncheon will be held in his honor on May 3rd at 1:00 PM at Papa Vino's in St. Joseph, Michigan. His spirit and love will be missed dearly, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of his family and friends.
